Marriage and Dowry Essay
Lady â⬠a girl, a sister, a spouse and a grandma, for an amazing duration she fantasies about having an awesome life, an actual existence to make sure that her grades in the school will satisfy her folks, a real existence to make sure that her significant other remains solid, a real existence to make sure that her youngsters concentrate for their tests and a real existence to bite the dust seeing others upbeat. She thinks about others, more than herself, at that point why we see her such a great amount of defenseless in each snapshot of her life. Such a large number of issues to discuss ladies, assault being the most well known issue on ladies in right now, practically all the ladies, in India, are powerless against this offense. Be that as it may, much the same as assault, the share framework has influenced the ladies mentally, genuinely and inwardly. The settlement framework slaughters her like a moderate toxic substance. The custom of share, in India, has spread through the chain of importance of social separation. A few women's activists propose that the training was at first embraced by the upper positions, at that point over some stretch of time it has been passed down into lower ranks, and inevitably arrives at the untouchables, the pariahs. As the sociological examinations recommends, regularly lower bunches expect to duplicate there predominant gathering in there society. India positions 136, in Human Development Index, among 187 regions around the globe. This show, the individuals in India are in awful condition and the greater part of the populace lives in neediness. The explanation behind destitution in India, on the off chance that we look verifiably, it is a result of the position framework, which confined portion of the populace, in India, to create, as even in present time 66% of Dalits are poor, and in the event that we look in present time, training has denied the poor from improving ways of life. It is these more unfortunate segments just as the working class of our nation who, not being taught and having great way of life are still administered by old traditions and customs and keep on rehearsing the share framework, were for the sake of gifting the man of the hour the brideââ¬â¢s family is placed into obligation. However, even in numerous rich families as well, this framework is being followed, despite the fact that they are knowledgeable. The totals of money and merchandise required, as share, are regularly so enormous that the installment can prompt endless loop of obligation in the marriage family. This has a terrible impact on the lives of unmarried ladies who are considered as monetary liabilities by their folks, this prompts inclination of kid over young lady, prompting female child murder and among the wedded ladies; they are truly and intellectually hurt by their spouses and his relatives, whenever guaranteed settlement are not pending. Modernization in India has turned into an obstruction to numerous traditions to be proceeded, similar to the position framework, the kid marriage and so on. yet, modernization has likewise lead to increment by and by of specific traditions which were confined to specific networks, as referenced previously. At the point when we see position, settlement and modernization, they are all entomb connected with one another. With modernization, individual isn't confined to do his position occupation and has opportunities to have great way of life. Since new pay and winning chances, realized by modernization, are prevalently filled by men, there sticker price of settlement expanded. In the wake of breaking down the authentic advancements of share framework among the individuals in India, who are administered under Hindu law, presently let us take a gander at the Muslims, who are the second biggest populace in India. Regardless of the way that Islamââ¬â¢s excellence lies in effortlessness and it suggests straightforward marriage, a few offenses, for example, endowment have sneaked into Muslim society in a wide range. At the point when we glance through Quran, we go over ââ¬Å"Mahrâ⬠. As per ââ¬Å"mahrâ⬠it is a compulsory installment, as cash or assets paid by the husband to be, or by groomââ¬â¢s father, to the lady of the hour at the hour of marriage that legitimately becomes brideââ¬â¢s property. Be that as it may, as time has cruised by, Muslims have changed their character and are following their Hindu partners in requesting and offering share both, in substantial money and kind. The opposition among the rich and wealthy segment of the Muslim people group to hold a decent counterpart for their little girls for whatever the interest is, has expanded. Training has scarcely has any impact on the psyches of the individuals in regard of share. Despite what might be expected, a profoundly instructed man anticipates a higher measure of share, similarly as it occurs among the Hindus. The viciousness submitted on ladies, for share, has expanded lately. In the event that we watch appropriately, with regards to why this endowment savagery happens, we can see a more extensive picture. The purpose behind share is for the most part on the grounds that the ladies are viewed as less beneficial than man, idea of settlement itself shows that oneââ¬â¢s sex decides oneââ¬â¢s worth. The underlying foundations of this lack can be seen were even a lady of the hour, who might be knowledgeable and winning than her better half, will in any case need to follow through on the share cost, much the same as the other lady of the hour who isn't instructed and not gaining. What's more, in certain examples as well, were regardless of whether requests for share were to be fulfilled completely, young ladies would keep on confronting torment and badgering in their parents in law homes as a result of womenââ¬â¢s exceptionally authorized inadequacy. Share passings are case of male centric power. Now and again, the man centric power communicates by killing the young ladies by igniting with lamp oil (generally visit in urban zones) or suffocating (normal in rustic regions). Different strategies utilized to kill incorporate harming and physical battery. These realities and authentic improvement shows that it is a result of the disregard and uncultured conduct that we appear towards ladies, has lead to female child murder, uneducated young ladies, lewd behavior, share framework, overwhelming obligation in brideââ¬â¢s family and abusive behavior at home. Let every one of us regard ladies, and treat them has rises to, on the grounds that lone this arrangement, will prompt abolishment of numerous social shades of malice against ladies.

Fahrenheit 451 Through the Lens of We Wear the Mask and Barn Burning - Literature Essay Samples
Ray Bradburyââ¬â¢s novel Fahrenheit 451 explores the idea of a person living a tedious, restrictive life while trying to fool himself into believing in a sense of happiness. Similarly, Paul Laurence Dunbarââ¬â¢s poem, ââ¬Å"We Wear the Mask,â⬠proposes the idea that people are wearing masks in order to deceive themselves and others and suppress their real emotions. Fahrenheit 415 further elaborates that one can only find true happiness if he makes the decision to abandon everything familiar and just run away, achieving tranquility and inner delight. ââ¬Å"Barn Burning,â⬠a short story by William Faulkner, also presents the life changing decision to flee from the unpleasant, well-known life in order to find true contentment. This essay, through explicit use of ââ¬Å"We Wear the Maskâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Barn Burning,â⬠will explore the superficial urban life of Guy Montag, the main character in Fahrenheit 451, and later on his important decision to run away from c ivilization, thus finding his true self and inner peace. In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury argues that the best way to break free from the vicious circle that is exemplified by a fake monotonous life without real feelings or excitement is by making a conscious decision to escape from this reality and find a new place to begin exploring oneââ¬â¢s inner self and observing new surroundings. While going through this empty, false life, a person capable of thinking for himself has to pretend that he is foolishly content and oblivious to the faults of his way of living. The characters in these texts find different ways to escape or conceal the real feelings about their own lifestyle. In ââ¬Å"We Wear the Mask,â⬠the mask represents oneââ¬â¢s face as something still and immutable, and this is the standard. ââ¬Å"We smileâ⬠because this has become the only acceptable behavior. These two words insinuate that putting on this fake grin is effortless and simple. The genuine emotions, on the other hand, are heavily suppressed, and people ââ¬Å"let them only see us, while / We wear the mask.â⬠Allowing others to see one without his usual, content countenance is regarded as a sign of weakness. Therefore, this person may feel wretched or miserable but ââ¬Å"let[s] the world dream otherwise,â⬠for hiding his true feelings deep down inside the mind serves as the only way to ephemerally escape them. In ââ¬Å"Barn Burning,â⬠Sartyââ¬â¢s constant moving embodies the way he and his family try to break away from their critical problem. His fatherââ¬â¢s bellicose burning torments the whole family, so they flee from one town to another without knowing ââ¬Å"where they are goingâ⬠(Barn Burning, 7) in a desperate attempt to temporarily forget all about the Abnerââ¬â¢s issues. ââ¬Å"It was always somewhere, always a house of sorts waiting for them a day or two days or even three days awayâ⬠(Barn Burning, 7). This quote illustrates Sartyââ¬â¢s attitude towards this nomad-like existence. He constantly keeps a little ray of hope inside, for he feels that there will always be a suitable place for the family, and they can carry on pretending to be happy in a new location. In Fahrenheit 451, people are accustomed to concealing all genuine emotional bursts and living this pseudo-delightful life, only showing what lays on the surface, similarly to ââ¬Å"We Wear the Maskâ⬠. Montag and his wife, Mildred, are ââ¬Å"not in love with anyone,â⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 51) but pretend they are happy with their marriage. When he confronts her in regard to something real like ââ¬Å"t[aking] all the pills in [her] bottle last night,â⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 27) Mildred has already absorbed this problem, saying that she ââ¬Å"wouldnââ¬â¢t do thatâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 27) and dismisses it as a figment of Montagââ¬â¢s imagination. These two passages demonstrate that in Fahrenheit 451, people are unable to deal with unadulterated feelings, so they just hide them at the bottom of their minds. At the most conscious level of oneââ¬â¢s mentality, on the other hand, is situated the basic command to be obedient and follow the orders issued out by his superiors. Sarty ââ¬Å"had not been permitted to choose for himself,â⬠(Barn Burning, 21) so his fatherââ¬â¢s commands are carried out without question or hesitation. A simple ââ¬Å"Go.â⬠sends the son ââ¬Å"moving, running, outside the house, towards the stableâ⬠(Barn Burning, 21). This single word conveys the strength of Abnerââ¬â¢s influence over his son, for Sarty seems frantic, desperate to fulfill the commands given out. In the same manner, Montag is also being harshly controlled by his boss, Beatty. ââ¬Å"Everything to its proper place. Quick with the kerosene! Whoââ¬â¢s got a match!â⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 44). These fast-paced, energetic orders show how Montag has been taught to succumb to instructions without thinking individually in his mind. Like other firemen, he has become a mindless s lave as he ââ¬Å"grin[s] the fierce grin of all men singed and driven back by flameâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 11). This quote gives even more insight on the ways that Montag, akin to his colleagues, has been brainwashed. He has been fooled into believing that he loves and enjoys this dreadful profession, but in reality, he only burns these books because such orders are issued out to him. Under this superficial appearance, a person can easily keep his true identity intact. In ââ¬Å"We Wear the Mask,â⬠our true emotions are being concealed behind the fake, plastic smile. The mask ââ¬Å"hides [oneââ¬â¢s] cheeks and shades [his] eyes,â⬠as these two parts of the face are a dead giveaway of oneââ¬â¢s emotions. Therefore, they are kept secret from others. In ââ¬Å"Barn Burningâ⬠, Sarty describes his own father as being ââ¬Å"without face or depth ââ¬â a shape black, flat, and bloodless as though cut from tin in the iron folds of the frockcoat which had not been made for him, the voice harsh like tin and without heat like tin,â⬠(Barn Burning, 8). This vivid illustration of Abner evokes the sentiment that he is this unreal entity, inhuman and almost alien in appearance and behavior. He does not need to hide behind a mask, for he stays stolid, like a blank canvas. Montag, on the other hand, starts hiding behind a mask deliberately, for he be gins thinking in a more vivid, poetic way, which shocks and petrifies him. ââ¬Å"What?ââ¬â¢ asked Montag of that other self, the subconscious idiot that ran babbling at times, quite independent of will, habit and conscienceâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 18). Guy tries to mentally distance himself from this other wiser personality because being different is something truly horrifying and dangerous in his world. The fact that these genuine thoughts come at random times make them even more unusual for Montag. As a result, he feels obliged to keep this part of his entity hidden well. The second most important step of a personââ¬â¢s path to finding his true self consists of the many small clues that there is something wrong in his life, leading to the lightning-fast moment in which he realizes that his existence so far had been everything but perfect and that his previous outlook had been tinted by rose-colored glasses. While wearing the mask, a person takes into account all the difficulties he had experienced, forcing him to put it on in the first place. As ââ¬Å"We Wear The Maskâ⬠reveals, ââ¬Å"[A]ll [his] tears and sighsâ⬠have been carefully kept under control, but one finally comes to term with these misfortunes. The excruciating pain caused by the ââ¬Å"torn and bleeding heartsâ⬠finally catches up with the person, and he realizes that he has to change something in the name of his future existence. In ââ¬Å"Barn Burning,â⬠Sarty fully realizes that his familyââ¬â¢s life is not in its proper state, but feels helpless when it com es to improving it. He is ââ¬Å"not heavy enough to keep him footed solid in [the world], to resist it and try to change the course of its eventsâ⬠(Barn Burning, 9). Being so young, Sarty has absolutely no influence over the other members of the family, so any form of resistance on his part would be futile. In Fahrenheit 451, Guy has many moments in which he questions his actual feelings towards his marriage and overall lifestyle. ââ¬Å"Well, wasnââ¬â¢t there a wall between him and Mildred, when you came down to it?â⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 51) He has already found out the answer, but inside, he refuses to believe that his marriage is failing. After a while, as he begins to think more and more, Montag realizes that his relationship with Mildred can be described as being ââ¬Å"a silly empty man near a silly empty womanâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Fahrenheit 451, 51). This further startles him because he had become used to thinking that he had a perfect, strong marriage full of mutual l ove. From this point on, Montag begins thinking in an entirely new way, feelings like ââ¬Å"[h]e was in someone elseââ¬â¢s houseâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Fahrenheit 451, 49). He finally realizes that there is no room for him in his own ordinary, sub-urban house, where he dwells with his emotionless wife, sharing no real connection with him; analogically, his formerly docile mind can no longer contain the new untainted thoughts, rushing though his head. Montagââ¬â¢s realization of his artificial life marks an important moment, for it starts the snowball effect, leading to his liberation. In order to make this sort of life more meaningful, a person begins making miniature, but significant changes to his own lifestyle. In ââ¬Å"Barn Burning,â⬠Sarty begins to openly question his fatherà ´s orders and sees to it that other people discover about the fatherà ´s pyromaniac tendencies. At one point in the story, Abner gives orders to Sarty, expecting the boy to react like always; however, ââ¬Å"[t]he boy did not move. Then he could speak. ââ¬Å"What â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ he cried. ââ¬Å"What are you â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Barn Burning, 21). This quote demonstrates Sartyââ¬â¢s first step towards finally reaching a better life. Even if he ends up complying with the fatherââ¬â¢s orders, at first, he tries to reason out why he has to obey. Correspondingly, in Fahrenheit 451, Montag also tries to understand the purpose of his job, but at first, he actually begins changing his life involuntarily. ââ¬Å"His hand had done it all, his hand, with a brain of its own, with a consci ence and a curiosity in each trembling finger, had turned thiefâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 45). Guy practically steals the book, but due to his conscious upbringing that books should be burned, he is scared by his own act. As a result, he attributes this to his bodyââ¬â¢s impulses. Later on in the book, he contemplates that by using the power of books, he may be able to unite people again. ââ¬Å"Maybe the books can get us half out of the cave. They just might stop us from making the same damn insane mistakes!â⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 81). Montag is genuinely concerned with making changes to the whole world. He feels that the knowledge people can get from books is too valuable to be burnt away. As a result, Montag decides to finally break away from his fireman profession in order to learn all about books. These changes begin to escalate, and in the end, a person is pushed to make a life-changing decision. In ââ¬Å"Barn Burning,â⬠Sarty makes this choice in a ââ¬Å"flight or flightâ⬠moment. ââ¬Å"I could keep on, he thought. I could run on and on and never look back, never need to see his face again,. Only I canââ¬â¢t. I canââ¬â¢tâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Barn Burning, 21). He either has to follow his fatherââ¬â¢s orders like always or he can disobey the commands and think for himself for the very first time. Sarty has finally matured enough to realize that his fatherââ¬â¢s actions are wrong and unforgivable. He flees in panic and confusion, and ââ¬Å"[a]t midnight he [sits] on the crest of a hill. He [does] not know it [is] midnight and he [does] not know how far he [has] comeâ⬠(Barn Burning, 24). Sartyââ¬â¢s decision has great influence on himself and probably his family. The boy is overwhelmed by his own freedom and his senses are numb. Neither time, nor we ather make any impression on the stupefied Sarty. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag makes a series of important decisions, but the most significant one is his choice to leave the city behind and run away to meet the people living on the railroad tracks. Upon exiting the city, he finds himself around nature. ââ¬Å"But he was at the river. He touched it, just to be sure it was realâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 147). This quote exemplifies Montagââ¬â¢s disbelief that he can be at a place so far away from the fake, industrial city and so tranquil and relaxing. ââ¬Å"He felt as if he had left a stage behind and many actorsâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 146). This quote further illustrates his attitude towards his wife, Mildred, and all the other citizens. Guy believes that none of them ever took off their mask, and he feels delighted to be away from all this. Montagââ¬â¢s choice to abandon the urban stage life of unsuspecting actors, ironically unaware of their own costumes, transforms him into a w hole new person. After such a purifying decision, a person has to come to terms with his new outlook and being. Sartyââ¬â¢s feelings are summed up in exactly five words. ââ¬Å"He did not look backâ⬠(Barn Burning, 25). He feels no remorse because he can finally make decisions for himself, without a barn burner telling him what to do, what to get, or what to say. Similarly, in Fahrenheit 451, Guy finds peace and mental balance when he is alone, exploring his new scenery. He ââ¬Å"float[s] in a sudden peacefulness, away from the city and the lights and the chase, away from everythingâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 147). The word ââ¬Å"awayâ⬠is stressed in this quote because it shows how Montag has distanced himself from everything that had previously made him sick. He is finally a new person in a new place. Where he meets the group of new people, they further reassure him. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re welcome hereâ⬠(Fahrenheit 451, 154). Guy finally belongs to a community with the same sense of awareness as him, and he understands that he is part of an initiative bigger than just stealing books. At last, Montag has come to terms with all the changes around and inside him, and he feels that his true life is just beginning. Through ââ¬Å"We Wear the Maskâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Barn Burning,â⬠this essay demonstrates the personal path of Fahrenheit 451ââ¬â¢s main character, Guy Montag, as he evolves from being an ordinary face behind an ordinary mask to becoming a new individual with real thinking skills, who finally makes the colossal decision to abandon civilization. Montag becomes liberated from the urban chains, hampering his mental power, and he can go on to accomplish his new goals, connected with his realization that books are good for people.

Essay on Fema - 4227 Words
Special Topics in Business Introduction The Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, is responsible for coordinating the governmentââ¬â¢s role in preparation, prevention, response and recovery from domestic disaster, whether they be natural or man-made. FEMA.gov lists 1849 total disasters declared since 1953, with an average of 32 each year (13). This particular agency has generated a lot of praise and but just as much criticism. Over the course of FEMAââ¬â¢s history, there are many lessons to be learned and FEMA is always looking for ways to be more effective. FEMAââ¬â¢s funding comes from the Presidentââ¬â¢s budget, but it is in direct competition with all of the other administrationââ¬â¢s current interests, particular with its sister departments within DHS. FEMA often takes a backseat to terrorism. In the integration of FEMA into the DHS, FEMA had to contribute to the start-up costs of the new department, but unfortunately evidence suggests that the agency may have been made to pay a disproportionately higher amount than larger agencies. FEMA officials say this directly affected their levels of service in 2004 and 2005 (14). In the integration, FEMA lost some programs, but lost major ones as well (14). In 2005, plans continued to reduce FEMA. Director at the time, Michael Brown, wrote a memo in June expressing his concern about the agencyââ¬â¢s future if the cuts continued (13). Perhaps the most ironic cut was the disaster planning exercise ââ¬Å"Hurricane Pam.â⬠This exercise, in which outlines a scenario where a disastrous hurricane hits New Orleans, leaving more than 100,000 people in the city, began a year before Katrina. The exercise was never finished because the Bush Administration cut funding (13). But it doesnââ¬â¢t look like FEMA is going anywhere. Prevention Of Hiv And Aids - 927 Words
HIV and AIDS have been on the rise in Alabama in the last 10 years. It amazes me that people do not take HIV and Aids more seriously. The reason I chose this topic was because I think we can do more to educate people on the effects of HIV and Aids. I came across a couple of interesting situations that I read about on social media. One thing was how easy people forget that they have a moral compass once they have contracted HIV and Aids. Then they think there life is over and proceed to try to get back at people by just sleeping with anybody they can find. Being mad at the world and not taking responsibility for their actions is what caught my attention and is why I chose this subject. In my paper I will be talking about the percentage of people in Alabama with HIV or Aids. The ways you can contract those diseases. How to treat the disease and where you can go to get tested. Which counties that have the most people that are infected. How the antidote is coming along for the treatment for HIV and or Aids. Why people choose not to get tested for HIV and or Aids. What precautions to take so you can prevent getting the diseases. Most people in todayââ¬â¢s society do not know the difference between HIV and Aids. HIV stands for Human immunodeficiency virus. Economic Development Essay Example For Students
Economic Development Essay LocationBangladesh is located in South Asia and shares borders with India to the west, the north and the east. To the southeast lies Burma. The southern shores are washed by the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh occupies a fertile delta created by two of Asias largest river systems, the Ganges and the Brahmiputra. PoliticsBangladesh is one of the youngest nations in Asia. Until two and a half decades ago, it formed the eastern half of Pakistan; the western half lay over 2,000 km away, on the other side of India. In 1971, Pakistans army attempted to subdue an East Pakistani movement for regional autonomy which led to a bloody civil war. India joined the war in early December of that year and, later that month, Bangladesh became an independent nation. A parliamentary democracy was established and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman came to power. Mujib was assassinated in August 1975 during a military coup. Afterwards Bangladesh went through a turbulent period characterized by a series of military coups. The last military ruler Gen. Hussain Mohammad Ershad, ruled for nine years, eventually toppled by a civilian movement in December 1990. Elections were held in 1991 under a neutral government and Khaleda Zia of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) became the countrys first elected Prime Minister in 16 years. In the parliamentary election held in June 1996, the Awami League, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahmans daughter Sheikh Hasina, came to power. The Awami League won 51 percent of seats in parliament; trailing behind the Awami League were the BNP with nearly 36 per cent of the seats and Hussain Mohammad Ershands Jatiyo Party with 10 per cent. The rest of the seats were won by other small parties and individual candidates. The Bangladeshi parliament has a single legislative chamber with 330 members. Three hundred members are directly elected on the basis of adult franchise while 30 women members are elected indirectly. Bangladesh has emerged as a leader of the movement of developing countries. The country maintains close ties with Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries, which employ large numbers of Bangladeshi workers. Relations with India have improved considerably due to the pragmatic approach taken by the current government. More recently, an influx of Burmese Muslim refugees acro ss the Southeastern border has created tensions with the Burmese authorities. The EconomyBangladesh is one of the most populous and poorest developing countries. The annual per capita income is about US$265. With its newfound political stability, Bangladesh has undertaken an ambitious program of economic reforms, and opened its doors to foreign investment. A large workforce, and low wages and costs make Bangladesh an attractive base for setting up manufacturing and assembling facilities. The present government has initiated several measures to stimulate economic growth. New businesses are being encouraged and there are generous tax incentives for exporters. Foreign-exchange restrictions have been eased. Overseas businesses are being wooed as foreigners are now allowed to own ventures wholly and are permitted to invest in the stock market. The mobilization of domestic resources is a key priority of the program. The results have been satisfactory. Economic growth has improved steadily since 1991. Inflation has been substantially reduced and the external current account balance has also improved. As a result of more rapid growth in the services sector, overall real GDP growth was 5.5 per cent in 1996, 5.9% in 1997 and 5.6% is the preliminary estimate for 1998. Encouraged by the governments policies of deregulation and financial sector reform, both private and public sector investments and national savings have increased steadily. Investment was equivalent to 12.1 per cent of GDP in 1992, 12.7 per cent in 1993, 14.6 per cent in 1994 16 per cent in 1995, 16.5 per cent in 1996 and 16.75 per cent in 1997. The national savings rate was 9.6 per cent of GDP in 1992 and continued to grow through the years to 12.95 per cent in 1997. With a steadily improving external environment as the world economy slowly recovers, as well as a more stable political environment and speedier implementation of policy reforms, gross domestic investment is expected to increase to 17.4 per cent of GDP in 1997. Motorcycle Boy EssayIn a brief reference to one of their activities, cropping techniques, MCC has made sure that its efforts will be relevant to the local farmers in the region and that the effects of their efforts reach the target group. MCC has also attempted to make its activities more relevant to poorer farmers. This NGO, along with its other successful endeavors in the way of the sanitation program and the jute handicrafts of Bengali women, has been able to reach the poorest groups in Bangladesh with innovative programs. MicrofinanceA new phenomenon amongst NGOs that has aided many countries and has helped the people of Bangladesh is micro-credit. Microcredit is designed to give buying power to the rural poor. Using small loans to purchase basic inputs such as seed, fertilizer, tools and nets, or to start up microenterprises, millions of rural men and women are lifting themselves and their families out of extreme poverty and into a more productive life. Where it is criticized for it efforts, the repayments of the loans speak a world of success for the process. Loan repayments in countries as diverse as Bangladesh, Benin and Dominica are at a remarkable level of 97% about 20% higher than agricultural credit repayments in some industrialized countries. This clearly shows that microfinance can be a powerful tool in overcoming poverty. Other NGO EffortsThis year during the monsoon season, the heavy rains in South Asia resulted in what could have been the worst natural clamity for Bangladesh of the century. The massive amounts of flooding experienced pushed rivers to record heights which remained high for over 70 days. This flooding affected over 30 million people and left 10 million homeless. Infrastructure of all types was severely damaged. The flooding is predicted to result in a three to four percent decrease in the countrys gross domestic product and obviously a very negative impact on the economy of Bangladesh. The agricultural sector was by far the most devastated. It is estimated that 1.5 million acres of production was lost, most of it being the main monsoon rice crop. Food security is of great concern since this will leave them with a shortfall of 4.5 million metric tonnes of food. MCC is planning a major post-flood rehabilitation project in its working areas to assist in rebuilding the lives of those most distressed due to the flood, through food-for-work projects to rebuild rural infrastructure and provide work, through rebuilding homes of the poorest beneficiary families so they can return to their farms, and through provision of seed and fertilizer to enable farmers to begin food production. Wayne Bremner, MCC Abbotsford. As the research shows, NGOs are playing an important role in the development of Bangladesh. Because of this, the government is making various attempts to include NGO efforts in their own development work. On the negative side, there are many new NGOs being formed. Some of which have primary interest in chasing available funds and not in helping the people. Works CitedHarry W.
